Kin: Microsoft Launches Social Networking Phones
Today, Microsoft is launching its own Microsoft-branded phones targeted at younger users, "Kin," also known as Project Pink. There are two models of the phone.
Project Pink: The Details
- Microsoft has dubbed a group of younger users "sociologists." They like to share pictures on Facebook, check on their friends via mobile, talk tech and blog. They're talking about Generation Y.
- Microsoft is now touting the positives of Windows Phone 7, but said that it found an opportunity to really reach this younger, more share-happy audience by modifying Windows Phone 7 and focusing it on social networking and social media.
- It's called the "Kin," and it comes in two flavors.
- The first phone is almost completely square. Microsoft is demoing the device on stage now, showing off its social features. Your contacts are almost entirely photo-based — it looks like a collage when you look at your favorites or friends.
- The interface is touchscreen: You can do drag-and-drop of links and swipe to open windows such as search. It does have a physical keyboard.
- It has a video service via Zune — I wonder how it looks on this size screen.
- The phone has access to the Zune music cloud service; you can stream music via Zune without having to store any on the Kin phone.
- 5- and 8-megapixel cameras on the two models, and it shoots video in 720p.
- The Kin Studio: There is a web component to your phone. You can access your friends, photos, social networks and more via a slick-looking interface. It features a timeline of your social history — when you uploaded photos, videos, etc.
- Photos are automatically geotagged and can be put on a Bing (Bing) map for easy viewing.
